Registration of Societies
All clubs & associations are considered as a society under Malaysian Societies Act 1966 and come under the purview of the Register of Societies (Malaysia).
The registration of Societies Dept. is primarily concern with the registration, control and supervision as well as the maintenance of records pertaining to registered societies and its branches throughout Malaysia so that they do not adversely affect security, peace, public order, welfare or morality in Malaysia.
Under the Societies Act 1966, a society is defined as inclusive of Club Company, partnership or association of seven (7) or more persons whatever it’s natural or subject.
This includes any company association partnership and cooperative society referred to be registered under written any written law.
In setting-up a society, there are various steps and formalities to be followed and documents to be submitted to the Registrar of Societies for approval. All applications are to be submitted at the State Registration of Societies Department in which the proposed society is located. The timeframe for approval in some cases may take up to 2 years.
Upon approval, the organization must maintain a bank account to manage the finances and further required to submit tax returns to the Inland Revenue Board (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri) except for charitable organizations.
